Unveiling the Science Behind HIFU: The Precision of the Focus Dual Device for Skin Rejuvenation

becwarhurst

In the pursuit of youthful skin, various treatments have surfaced. However, one stands out for its effectiveness; High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), nick-named the non-surgical facelift! As one of the few treatments that can reach the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS layer), previously only accessible via surgery, the Focus Dual device is at the forefront, revolutionising how we treat sagging skin. This article will explore how HIFU works, with an emphasis on how the Focus Dual, more specifically, rejuvenates ageing skin.

What is HIFU?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment that utilises ultrasound technology to tighten tissues, destroy fat cells, and stimulate collagen production deep within the skin layers.

The ultrasound technology delivers energy into the skin via high frequency sound waves. The sound waves heat the treatment area to 65-70 degree Celsius, which coagulates (clumps) the tissues, resulting in a shrinking, tightening and a lifting effect to the skin. This intensity of heat can also destroy fat cells, so HIFU is additionally used as a fat reduction treatment.

Collagen regeneration is proliferated through the wound healing response to the heat treatment, so in addition to immediate tightening of the tissues, the skin's structural support is enhanced over time as the collagen matrix improves. Unlike traditional surgical facelifts, HIFU targets sagging skin without the need for incisions.

HIFU can be used on the face, neck and many areas of the body and has rapidly gained popularity due to its lifting and tightening effects, coupled with minimal downtime. This technique effectively contours treatment areas and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to a smoother, younger appearance. As it can also destroy fat cells, it is an effective treatment in reducing stubborn areas of fat on the body, such as around the waistline, thighs, upper arms and more.

Benefits of HIFU Over Other Skin Rejuvenation Methods

HIFU offers multiple benefits, making it a top choice for those with sagging skin:

Non-Invasive Treatment

HIFU is a non-invasive alternative to surgical facelifts, involving no incisions, significantly less risk of complications, and almost no downtime. This makes it a highly attractive option for individuals who wish to avoid either the cons or the high cost of surgery, but still want evident results.

Minimal Downtime

Patients can return to their normal activities almost immediately after a HIFU session with the Focus Dual device. Unlike traditional surgical procedures that may require weeks of recovery, HIFU allows for almost instant recovery.

Long-lasting Results

The results from HIFU are often felt immediately but are best seen over the following months. As collagen continues to form with greater proliferation that it did pre-treatment, patients can expect to see improvements for up to a year post-treatment. This progressive enhancement creates a more natural look over time, unlike other methods that provide immediate but less sustainable and less natural results.

Safe for All Skin Types

HIFU is safe for almost all skin types and tones, making it a versatile choice. The precise targeting offered by the Focus Dual device allows it to address individual skin conditions effectively, ensuring safety and efficacy.

How Does the Focus Dual Device Work?

The Focus Dual incorporates advanced technology that enhances traditional HIFU treatments. It delivers ultrasound energy to very precise areas, ensuring effective penetration at the necessary depth for optimal results.

Although this blog does not cover radiofrequency or micro-needling, it is worth noting here that the Focus Dual can also deliver these two treatments simultaneously (or micro-needling alone) to an advanced standard. These functions will be covered separately in a future blog.

Precision Targeting

One significant advantage of the Focus Dual is its accuracy. While standard HIFU may cover a wider area, the sound waves delivered by this device are very precise in their placement, allowing us to concentrate on specific zones of skin at varying depths and allowing for customised treatments. For example, if a patient has jowls and a drooping brow, the Focus Dual can target these areas distinctly, at the most effective depths in each separate area, for better results.

Precision not only comes into play with regards to targeted treatment depths, but also in relation to the impact on surrounding tissues. Since the Focus Dual heats body tissue at the focal area only, rather than covering a wider, less specific area, treatment can be delivered without overtreating and causing damage to tissues or loss of fat to unintended areas.

Depth of Penetration

Since the Focus Dual can deliver the treatment at very precise depths, three layers of skin can be treated with accuracy - the SMAS, deep dermis and superficial dermis - allowing a triple layer lift, without overtreating and causing damage to surrounding tissue.

Controlling the depth of ultrasound delivery is crucial for achieving the desired results. Different skin layers respond to treatment at varying depths. The Focus Dual excels at penetrating deeper layers—up to a whopping 13 mm for fattier areas to destroy fat cells and more superficially at three different depths for skin tightening—while protecting the skin's surface from damage. This minimises the downtime, while maximising results.

This level of precision means that patients receive targeted and effective treatment tailored to their unique skin needs.

What to Expect From a HIFU Treatment

Before undergoing a HIFU procedure, it's crucial to consult with a qualified practitioner familiar with the Focus Dual device. Here’s what typically happens:

  1. Consultation: Discuss any skin concerns and desired outcomes. The practitioner will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for the treatment and assess your skin needs to customise the treatment accordingly. At Opalesce Skin Clinic, you are encouraged to leave a gap between consultation and treatment to allow for a cooling-off period and avoid treatments being rushed into on the initial wave of excitement!

  2. Treatment: During the treatment your skin should be cleansed before the HIFU is applied to target areas. At Opalesce Skin Clinic, the skin is also prepared with an enzymatic, light peel, to remove dead skin cells and bring fresh new skin cells to the surface before the treatment. HIFU delivery with the Focus Dual takes longer than other HIFU devices due to it's precision over smaller treatment areas, so depending on the size of the area, patients can expect to be on the treatment couch for up to 1.5hrs.

  3. Will it Hurt? While patients might feel some discomfort or a stinging sensation, most people find it tolerable and it usually fades quickly.

  4. Will I Need More than One Session? Some people will notice a satisfactory difference after one session of HIFU with the Focus Dual, however, the majority of people will need more than one session for maximum results. The recommended average is one to three sessions for facial skin rejuvenation.

  5. How Much Will it Cost? Prices will vary from clinic to clinic, but HIFU treatments with the Focus Dual typically range between £175 to £675 depending on the size of the area being treated. As a rough guide, a full face lift with the Focus Dual will set you back between £500 and £600.

  6. Possible Side Effects: The skin might appear flushed at first, but any redness should subside within a few hours. Other post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising, numbness or changes in sensation to small areas of skin.

  7. Post-Treatment Care: Following treatment, patients can return to everyday activities immediately and the aftercare is minimal. Your practitioner will provide you with any instruction for post-procedure skincare.

What are the Limitations of a HIFU treatment?

The best candidates for HIFU have mild to moderate skin laxity, where the skin is starting to look and feel less firm and is a little saggy. For these patients, a good result can be achieved and with a sensible maintenance programme will significantly slow down any further skin laxity.

If the skin is too lax and requires notable lifting, we cannot expect the HIFU treatment to be effective in obtaining a satisfactory result. Patients with very lax skin are likely to require a surgical face lift to achieve a desirable result.

Before & Afters

Final Thoughts

HIFU with the Focus Dual device marks a significant advancement in skin rejuvenation technology. By utilising focused ultrasound energy, this method allows for tailored treatments that specifically address individual concerns. Whether dealing with sagging skin or aiming to enhance overall complexion and slow down the signs of ageing, HIFU provides an effective solution with minimal downtime.

The gradual improvement and long-lasting benefits make it an appealing choice for those who wish to maintain a youthful look without undergoing surgery. As technology advances, HIFU continues to lead in skin rejuvenation, offering remarkable possibilities for restoring elasticity and firmness to the skin.
